The view has to be worth the hike
Hikes aren't worth it unless the view outweighs the effort it took to get it, and you couldn't have gotten the view any other way.
I'm talking like strenuous 3h+ hikes where you're so out of breath you can't talk to the people you're hiking with.
Sure, nature is cool and you're getting exercise, but for me, the only defensible reason to go hiking is if you REALLY wanted to see this amazing view that you couldn't have gone to otherwise. If the hike is so difficult that you can barely talk to anyone or do anything other than just focusing on hiking, it's not worth it. There are better things like going on a nice walk in nature on a wide trail where you can talk to your friends. You can also go on a nice drive and enjoy the view without being sweaty, hungry, tired, cold, etc.
Hikes need to have a payoff that outweighs the effort that you put into it. I'd rather just go walk in the park.
